Closer by Patrick Marber

Winner of the 1998 Olivier Award for Best Play and the 1999 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Play.

Closer is a brutal, honest, and often arrestingly funny examination of modern romance and betrayal. As the lives of four strangers become intimately entwined, they spiral downward, desperately longing for intimacy and love as emotions and passion rage beyond their control.

Directed by ensemble member Ronan Marra

featuring ensemble members Georgann Charuhas, Brandon Bruce and Aaron Snook with Tammy Stackpoole

set: Melania Lancy, costumes: Laura M. Dana, lights: Amanda Clegg Lyon, sound: ensemble member Anthony Ingram, projections: Julie E. Ballard, props: Sarah Elizabeth M. & Devon MacGregor, dialects: Phil Timberlake, stage manager: ensemble member Stephanie Ehemann

Critic's Pick "Ronan Marra’s sleek, well-paced production packs in enough wit to outshine Marber’s sly but often frustrating text. And this solid cast, too, knows dramatic hooks are sometimes best served with a wink." — Tim Lowery, Time Out Chicago

"Darkly funny and emotionally riveting" — Barbara Vitello, Daily Herald

Not To Be Missed "In one of those little gems from the hip young troupe, Signal Ensemble offers a thrillingly fresh comedy of manners…high quality [with] stellar performances." — Tom Williams, ChicagoCritic.com

"Closer is a sad, savvy, often funny play that casts a steely, unblinking gaze at the world of relationships and lets you come to your own conclusions…Closer does not merely hold your attention; it burrows into you." — NY Magazine

"…a brilliant and bracingly adult new play from London…bruising and beautiful, shatteringly funny and devastatingly sad. The play's dialogue has a raw emotionality rarely heard in art or life. It cuts like broken glass…full of bitter, intelligent, unvarnished truth. — Variety

"A powerful, darkly funny play about the cosmic collision between the sun of love and the comet of desire." — Newsweek Magazine

"In its cutting contemporary picture of sexual desire and emotional failure, Closer is a brilliantly unusual virtual reality that rings true. The best new play on Broadway." — NY Observer
